Amelia Island, Florida

Walker's Landing Wedding Photographer

Walker's Landing is one of my favourite places in Northeast Florida to photograph a wedding, and the reason is simple: it faces west over the marsh, so the light at the end of the day does something you cannot buy.

I have photographed here, so this is not a guess about how the day runs. Below is what I have actually found useful about shooting at this venue.

About the venue

Walker's Landing sits on the marsh side of the Omni Amelia Island Resort, looking out over the Intracoastal Waterway rather than the ocean. The setting is oaks, marsh grass and open water, with a large octagonal deck as the centrepiece and an indoor space alongside it.

Because it is part of a full resort, most of the logistics people worry about are handled on site, and guests can stay where the wedding is. For photography that matters more than it sounds: nobody is driving between locations in wedding clothes.

Photographing a wedding at Walker's Landing

The deck and the marsh behind it are the signature frame, and they are at their best in the last hour of daylight. If you only protect one thing in your timeline here, protect that window.

The oaks give you shade and texture earlier in the day, which is where I tend to put family groupings and anything that would otherwise be shot in hard midday light. Getting ready in a resort room is usually workable, though the light depends on which way the room faces, so it is worth asking.

Best spots for photographs

A short list of what I actually use here, roughly in the order the day reaches them.

  • Under the oaks, for family groups and shaded portraits earlier in the day
  • The deck rail looking west over the marsh, for couple portraits near sunset
  • The open marsh view itself, which carries a wide frame better than most Florida venues
  • The indoor space for reception coverage once the light has gone

Timeline advice for this venue

Work backwards from sunset. A ceremony that lands roughly ninety minutes before sunset leaves room for family photographs straight afterwards and still puts your couple portraits in the best light of the day.

Amelia Island is about an hour and a quarter north of me, so I plan to arrive early rather than tight. Travel outside my usual Northeast Florida area is quoted rather than assumed, and I will put it in writing before you book.

Common questions

Have you photographed at Walker's Landing before?

Yes. It is one of the venues I have worked, which is why there is a page about it. Ask me and I will send you a full gallery from a wedding there rather than a handful of favourites.

Do you charge travel to Amelia Island?

Amelia Island is outside the area I cover with no travel charge, so it is quoted. Ask when you enquire and I will give you the number up front rather than at contract stage.

When should the ceremony be for the best photographs here?

Roughly ninety minutes before sunset. That leaves time for family groupings after the ceremony and still puts couple portraits in the light the marsh is known for.

What happens if it rains?

There is indoor space on site, so a wet ceremony is an inconvenience rather than a crisis. I plan a covered option for every wedding regardless of the forecast.

Do you work with the resort's coordinator?

Yes, and gladly. A venue coordinator who knows the property makes the day run better for everyone, and I follow their lead on house rules.
